What are the different parts in a car stereo?

What are the different parts to a car stereo and what does each do?What are the different parts in a car stereo?
head unit, responsible for receiving the sound input and sending it to the ; speakers, responsible for recreating faithfully the sound sent from the head unit. If you are referring to what is a car stereo then try this. 1 RF AMP, responsible for amplifying the incoming signal;2 2nd rf amp, same as the first rf amp. 3 if oscillator, responsible for creating the intermediate frequency [if] 4 if amp [if required];5 tuner oscillator, alters the frequency at which the incoming signal is processed;6 padder capacitor; keeps the tuning capacitance with in 50 to 150 pf;7 preamplifier; designed to amplify the signal sufficiently to feed it into the 8 Af amplifier, the final stage that buffers and amplifies the signal so that it can be reproduced audibly by the car speakers. the final Af stage includes the volume control and any bass and treble controls. this is a very simplified version of a car radio.

How to take out my car stereo?

So my friend and I are trying to hook up my subs and amp to my car. But when we were trying to get out the stereo part, we took off the black surrounding plastic part. We took a knife and were just trying to pry out the stereo, but something is getting stuck and it isnt just sliding. Any tips??? Please let me know what i should do and if there is something blocking it etc!How to take out my car stereo?
there are some little sticky out triangular bits of metal on each side of the radio, when the radio is pushed in to the metal surround, the sticky out bits are there to stop the radio being pulled back out, a bit like a barb on a fish hook,

what you normally get with a radio is 2 thin flat strips of metal which help you flatten out the "barbed" bits of metal, after putting both strips down each side, you have to wiggle the radio from side to side, bringing the radio forward bit by bit, it will eventually come out,

you can do the same with 2 thin knives, you can do the same with one knife, but you have to keep swapping it from side to side, bringing the radio forward bit by bit.

Good luck !How to take out my car stereo?

How to sync car stereo to steering wheel?

I just got a car and the owner before replaced the stereo with a pioneer one. I have no clue the model. It has red lights. The person never synced it to the steering wheel so I can't change the volume with it. Does anyone know how to do that? I have a 2008 Nissan versa if that matters at all.How to sync car stereo to steering wheel?
Hello.

PAC Audio makes a variety of steering wheel control adapters that work well. The first thing to look for is that the Pioneer radio you have is Steering Wheel Control Ready. This can be determined by looking in the owners manual or googling the model number.

Go onto Crutchfield.com and enter your vehicle and stereo specs into the "Outfit my Car" section. That will tell you what adapters you need to retain steering wheel function.

What is the best way to wire an iPod into your car stereo?

I tried to have Best Buy install it, but when they hardwired it into my car stereo, it would run my battery down when the car was turned off. The guy at Best Buy said all he did was hook it up through a hot wire and he didn't know why it drained the battery when turned off. Any suggestions? What is the best way to wire an iPod into your car stereo?
I would purchase a radio with a standard AUX input. Don't buy something that is made to only work with Ipod, don't limit yourself. If you buy something with a standard AUX input, you can use any device that has a headphone jack on it. I did a custom install on my MX-5 last month so I could use my Iriver....Ipod knockoff. I put the CD player in my glove box, flush mounted into a black vinyl backdrop. I ran the AUX cable (really a headphone jack with 2 male ends) so it would come up through where my emergency brake handle is....that way you don't have to see any wires running from my device to the glove box, or dashboard if you put it there.....visible wires are terrible. My Iriver has an FM tuner, so I don't have to keep the glove box open. I keep the CD player volume at a set level and control the volume through my Iriver.....it is actually a pretty sweet setup.

On the higher-end, you could put in an after market system with amps and everything and get a headphone to RCA jack and run your device straight in to your amps.
you can get an i-trip. you would just have to plug the i-trip into your ipod and set a certain station and it would play the music from your ipod. Also, if you have a cassette player, and you have one of those hook-ups where you put a blank casette and run the wire to your i-pod, that works the sameWhat is the best way to wire an iPod into your car stereo?
Get a stereo with i-Pod attatchment. More and more new cars have the adapter for iPods to be connected. Run it through the 12v socket to avoid draining your battery.
if u have an aftermarket stereo with ipod support or aux input, i'd buy an ipod adapter. a fm tuner is convient but the sound quality isnt really good. What is the best way to wire an iPod into your car stereo?
Im SOO tired of answering this question. But here we go get a aftermarket radio, Pioneer and alpine are the best and get the ipod interface for it it will let you control and see info from the ipod directly through your radio faceplate and it will also charge your ipod while its pluged up. The sound quality is much better than the fm transmitters and theres less chance of you crashing tryin to find a song while lookin at the ipod versus controling the ipod through your radio
iTrip is not great, plus it drains batteries. you can get a Monster Car Tuner for the iPod for around $60 and it charges at the same time. like most of the other products, you chose an empty radio station
Well, my 1988 Honda Civic DX, still has its stock speakers and fm tuner, and so what I did is I went out and bought an adapter, that charges your iPod, can use any form of iPod, even minis/nanos. Its got adjustable wings that help hold it to it, and I think it's made by Belkin, and runs about 40-60 Bucks, defintely worth it!
buy the ipod tuner, you can plug it in to your cigarette lighter and tune into an empty radio FM radio channel and listen to your ipod!!

  • How can I find out what each pin in the back of my car stereo does?

There's 2 spots for plugs in the back of my car stereo. There is a plug in one of the spots for the speakers and power and stuff. The other spot (10-pin) is empty and I think it's for a CD changer. I want to wire up my ipod to it somehow. How can I figure out what these pins do?How can I find out what each pin in the back of my car stereo does?
yes i'd have thought it would be for a cd changer, as for knowing which pin did what, you would have to find a tech manual for the head unit you have and hope that has the info you need.

How to Remove a Car Stereo with Spring Mounted Clips?

Several cars have stereos mounted on four small clips, which hold the stereo in place.

How to Remove a Car Stereo with Spring Mounted Clips? How to Remove a Car Stereo with Spring Mounted Clips?
鈥?Invest in DIN tools, meant especially for car stereo removal, to remove a car stereo mounted on clips.

鈥?The U-shaped tools have small poles that can be inserted in the clips of the stereo.

鈥?Upon inserting them, you will hear a 'click', and the stereo can then be easily removed.

鈥?The cable of the antenna is now to be unscrewed, which is at the far end, close to the passenger side.

鈥?Now disconnect the wiring harness connector at the back of the stereo, that holds all the wires connected to the stereo, held in place by a wiring clip. These can be connected to the new car stereo.

How do you plug in a USB lead in a “rear USB in” car stereo?

I feel like this is a silly question but...

When a car stereo says it has a “rear USB in” does that mean you literally plug the USB cable in to the back of the stereo? If so how do you do that? Or how would you get it back out? Is there even any room for it when it’s in your car?How do you plug in a USB lead in a “rear USB in” car stereo?
Never seen it before, but you would want to get a USB extension lead, probably around 60cm long (estimate).

Then plug one end in the back of the car stereo, and feed it through to maybe the glove box, where it will just sit.

Then when you want to use a usb device, plug it into the end which is in the glove box.

A professional could think of a better place to put the extended USB besides the glove box, like perhaps in an empty switch button.

A simple, diy job, would be to put the end in the glove box.

Good luck. How do you plug in a USB lead in a “rear USB in” car stereo?
Ok In This Situation What The Installer Will Do Is Run A USB Extension Cable Into The Glove Box So It Is Accessible And Yet Concealed. How do you plug in a USB lead in a “rear USB in” car stereo?
if your car radio have 4 small wholes, one each corner of the front panel its easy.

those wholes are for removing the radio. any garage who fits radios could do this for you. after removing the radio just plug an USB extension lead (USB both ends male/female) and get it from the back of the radio into somewhere you can reach. Have the radio in place again and you have a USB connection available.

if you don't have the 4 wholes in the radio, you'll need to access the radio from the back either by removing the radio or trying to access from the bottom of the dashboard. (This is sometimes very tricky depending on the make and model of the car).

Do I need a new car stereo or just have it repaired?

I had my car stereo for over 3 years and a few weeks ago, the display on the screen would not come on but the sound would work. Then a week after that, it wouldn't even power up. Every once in a great while it would power on but now lately it doesn't even power up. Could it be that it has an electrical shortage? Or does it have a fuse that blew that I need to replace in the fuse box? Help me because I've been listening to my ipod shuffle and it's not the same like listening to my car stereo and also a little but embarrasing. I also hope that I don't have to purchase another car stereo.Do I need a new car stereo or just have it repaired?
yes it has some shortage in the fuses maybe the wires got crossed in the steering column when you made a left turn onto main street yesterday
Sounds like a fuse. There's probably an inline fuse. It should be on a red wire near the stereo. Check it out.Do I need a new car stereo or just have it repaired?
new new new. anything that is relevant to music must be in good condition!!!
It doesn't sound like a fuse because the problem is intermittent. It sounds like an intermittent short or something in the power supply. What you should do is compare the price of a new one to the cost of getting it fixed. Most car radio shops will charge you a fixed fee for most repairs and/or an estimate and they may know from past experience exactly what your problem is.Do I need a new car stereo or just have it repaired?
In the back of your car stereo there are three important wires that must have a good connection, (the two power, the red and yellow, and the ground wire) if any one of those wires have a bad connection you will have problems like you are experiencing. It is not a fuse, so don't waist your time with that. If all the wires check out, you can get it fixed (which will run about $100), but if you have to spend more then that go for a new deck. you can find a good stereo for $150+. Good luck ;)
Take the stereo out and check the dimmer wire.

  • How to fix a hot wire from my car stereo?

Okay I was installing my new stereo when I accidentally moved the hot wire from my truck and caused it to touch metal. Now that how wire does not give any power out so I had to "ghetto rig it" so my stereo will play. But now I have no memory and my left rear speaker doesn't play. Is there any way to fix this with our going to a car audio shop? How to fix a hot wire from my car stereo?
If the wire no longer carries current then chances are there is a fuse that was blown, Commonly a ten amp.

Additionally the wire you ran is most likely still tied to the ignition ACC and as such shuts off when the ignition is turned off and is not a constant battery feed.

switch the L and R speakers to test if the speaker is the issue or the signal to the speaker.

Three likely causes: Radio fault, wiring fault, speaker fault. Change those symptomatically until the source is narrowed down. How to fix a hot wire from my car stereo?
it sounds like you have blown a fuse. according to what kind of vehicle you have it could be one of the following fuses: RADIO, HORN, CIG LIGHTER, OR CLOCK. and the left rear speaker. check the purple wires or the green ones. then check the connection at the speaker if that does not work. How to fix a hot wire from my car stereo?
ok speakers shouldn't have anything to do with power wire issue......as for fixing ur truck....if its not a blown fuse and u cannot figure it out....u can always run new power wires.......the radio red needs constant 12+ for memory......the radio yellow needs key on + so that it only comes on when the ignition is on.......

so if u wanted u could run the red directly to battery or any other always on power source....would always add a inline fuse if u do this......

and the yellow u can add to any key on circuit....but would suggest only using non major components...don't use fuel pump engine or similar circuits.....

also keep in mind that u need to use a circuit that can handle the extra draw....so don't hook it to a circuit that has a 5 amp fuse.......good luck

normally stereos have a release leaver donw either side. its a small gap and if you shove a small screwdriver in it, it should release it from the surround.

also make sure you take note of the wires. if your stereo has a sticker with a guide to the wiring, then make sure you label all the wires connecting into the back of the stereo so when you come to install the new one, you know what goes where.

You can pull out the deck and ground the black wire, then twist the yellow and red wires together and connect them to a positive 12v source. You can just touch both of them to a car battery. Black=negative, yellow/red=positive. That'll power it on and you can eject the disc without taking it apart, and then won't have to worry about potentially messing something up should you friend choose to reuse or sell the deck

  • Where can I get the code for a honda accord anti theft stereo for my daughters car?

I purchased this Honda Accord Ex for my daughters first car about a month ago. The car is 10 years old and I just put a new battery in it.After I installed the new battery it reset the car stereo. It now asks for a code to enter to make the stereo work again. The car does not have the codes anywhere with the car and I called a dealer, they told me I had to take the stereo out ! Common! Any help here?Where can I get the code for a honda accord anti theft stereo for my daughters car?
I have a Honda Del Sol. When I bought the car I had the same issue, guess what I called the dealer and they were able to get me a code! I have no idea why your dealer told you this. My dealer contacted Honda and gave the serial number of the car and some info off the stero, they were able to supply a code to the dealer and yes it worked. I have since changed the batterey and the code has always worked! If you have a HONDA stock stero Honda does have the code on file I would contact the Honda headquaters ( I have always done this and they have been super helpful). Each code for Honda steros is different and from what I understand there is no universal code. However depending on the type of stero, they might be able to re-program it. Here is the Honda website:

    www.honda.com

Silly question you did contact a Honda dealer right? I know but, if you bought it used it could be from anywhere and I found that the Honda dealer is the one with the answers. I did not mean to insult you just a simple question. I will let you know that I have the 6 CD changer/Radio from Honda and they are no longer making them or the parts needed so, if more goes wrong with the stereo you might just want to have a place like Best Buy ect... install a new cheap one.

If you do get a code there is some important stuff to remember, if you type the code incorrectly 3 times you must RUN the car for a 1/2 hour before you can press the code again. Understand the car must run, no running no second chance. Second you have to press the keys hard and wait for the beep after each one. The book does not tell you this I had to contact Honda and learned the hard way.

Good Luck I hope this helps you!
when i bought a honda accord i went to the following web site:

owners.honda.com and registered my car by putting the vin # in and once logged in it already knew the radio code. If that does not work i would call honda and they can tell you.Where can I get the code for a honda accord anti theft stereo for my daughters car?
From what I have heard you do have to remove the radio and bring it to a dealer to reset the code. But you might want to try contacting a radio repair shop or a car stereo shop.they may have a way of resetting the code with the radio in the vehicle
Unless there is a book in the glove box with a card in it that has the code written down, the dealer is right, you will have to take it in.Where can I get the code for a honda accord anti theft stereo for my daughters car?
the dealer should no it so try other dealers
I always had to take the car to the dealer with the registration for them to verify it was mine, and then they put the code in.
ok, first find out the brand of the stereo, then call the 1-800 number that you can find on the website of the company that the brand belongs too... for example, if the stereo is Sony brand, you could get online and go to sony.com and get a number for customer service or something.. good luck
I kept resetting my husbands in his Oldsmobile. If things work on your Honda similarly, just take it in to the nearest Honda dealer and they can reset it for you. The first couple of times I did it, the GM garage charged around 40 each time. After that, they just gave us a code and showed us how to use it. If your local dealer won't do it, go to another one. I am sure one can help you.
It actually isn't very difficult to remove the radio. I removed the radio to my '95 civic, with a Phillips screwdriver. The panel under the radio had 4 screws holding it in. And once the panel was off The radio chassis has 2 screws connecting it to a piece of metal in the dash.

With the screws off, the radio pulls right out.

Why I am not getting good sound from my car stereo?

I have a brand new pioneer car stereo with two speakers on the rear channels connected. Now, when I set the balance all to the left or all to the right, the sound from the single speaker comes out great but when I set the balance to equal, the sound comes out very poor. Could be some settings or something wrong with the head unit or speakers? Any help? Why I am not getting good sound from my car stereo?
What you're describing is the classic test to tell whether your speakers are wired in phase.

The problem is that one of the two speakers has the (+) and (-) terminals reversed. The two speakers' outputs are 180 degrees out of phase with each other. When you're just playing one speaker, it's not a problem; but when both are playing, it causes massive cancellation over a wide range of frequencies--especially in the lower mid-range and bass frequencies.

Simply reverse the (+) and (-) connections on ONE of the two speakers. You'll hear the difference instantly. Why I am not getting good sound from my car stereo?

What could be wrong with this car stereo amp?

I installed my brother's car stereo for him a couple of weeks ago. Up until this point, it's worked perfectly fine. All of a sudden it started blowing the 30 amp fuse that is in the amp, not the inline power wire fuse, but the fuse box style fuse that plugs directly into the amp. I have changed it four times now and each time that I change it it blows again within seconds. Is it more likely to be a wiring problem or something within the amp? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! What could be wrong with this car stereo amp?
It is either something inside the amp that is pulling too much current. It can also be your alternator is not putting out enough current. If the battery has low volts and the alternator is weak, then the low voltage will make the amp pull more current than normal to get the same watts. have the alternator and battery load tested. a stereo shop can do this. What could be wrong with this car stereo amp?
YOU BETTER GO to the nearest car audio set-up shop... immediately... maybe it will burn your car i swear like my uncle experience so DAMN uncle... i won't like to hapen to other people alreadyWhat could be wrong with this car stereo amp?
check the power wire for bare spots
Disconnect the speaker wires at the amplifier, then see if it blows the fuse again. If it doesn't, then you may have shorted speaker wiring or a defective speaker. If it does, then there's an internal short in the amplifier.

What type of battery do I need for my car stereo system?

I need an auxillary battery for my car stereo system. What amount of cranking amps/maximum output do I need for my system? I have a 1,000 watt Kenwood amp and the lights are dimming and I'm running through alternators like mad. What type of battery do I need for my car stereo system?
Starting Batteries are measured in Cranking amps, and this measures battery power for starting an engine, in under 15 seconds. (aka short it, for 15 seconds, read minimum amps = cranking amps). This process should unload a sizeable amount of power from the battery as well. Unless your stereo is on for 20 second intervals, this measurement is irrelevant to you.

Deep Cycle batteries are measured in Amp Hours. This means that you can run amps through them for hours at a time; aka several CDs worth. Make sure you buy AGM or SEALED at least. AGM batteries are far more efficient (extends run time), safer (90% less h2o to Hyrdrogen which is explosive), can be installed at angles or upside down, require no maintenance, and they won't corrode your expensive electronics, upholstery, or interior. Add to this a UL rating, and it makes sense to spend for the better batteries. AGM batteries are usually 85% efficient at high amps, whereas flooded varieties are usually under 60% efficient.

    100ah x 85% efficient = 85 ah to drive the stereo...
    100ah x 60% efficient = 60 ah to drive the stereo

    WHAT SIZE?
Batteries are power tanks, so the bigger the better, within reason. Just pack them in until you reach size or weight requirements. The amp hours can be directly correlated to your stereo, at full power, based on the size. Watts = amps x volts so we just solve this little equation for Y.

    1000 Watt Stereo = 12 v * Y amps
    y = 83 amps

83 amps is needed by the stereo, note that this is an instantaneous measurement.
Should your stereo remain on all hour, you ran 83 amp hours through it.
But you have to overcome a bunch of inefficiencies to get the power there....

First we multiply to overcome the inefficiency in the battery..
    83 * 1.15 = 100 ah battery per hour

    Depending on how efficient the wires to get the power to the stereo are, you are losing even more power. (wire voltage drop increases with amps --manifests as heat). So when you have that stereo blasting, you are pulling 83-95 amps, depending on the setup. To make sure your wires are good, use the calculator on the bottom of this page, and keep the loss to under 5%. Since you already have it wired, you can see what the voltage drop is by percentage. Then you only need to multiply;
    83ah * 1.05 = 88 amps per hour @ 5% wire voltage drop
    83ah * 1.10 = 91 amps per hour @ 10% loss
    http://www.bdbatteries.com/wirerules.php

Next thing you need to take into consideration is depth of discharge. Since batteries are electro-chemical, they aren't quite perfect. When they go through a charge cycle, they lose some life. The harder you charge and discharge them, the less long they last. Look at the last page of the manual here for the graph.
    http://www.lifelinebatteries.com/manual.鈥?/a>

    Basically:
1 GPL-27T (100ah) will run your stereo, full blast, for one hour, 300 times.
2 GPL-27Ts (200ah) will run your stereo, full blast, for one hour, 1000 times.
By only discharging the batteries 1/2 way, you get 3 times the lifespan, not double.
Here is a list of UL listed, high quality AGM batteries that will do what you want.
The AGM batteries from Lifeline are 85% efficient at high amp loads, like what you will be doing (GPL-27T is second from top).
    http://www.bdbatteries.com/marinebatteri鈥?/a>
(flooded batteries are like 50-60% efficient by comparison)

Lastly, let's talk about your alternator:
All power under the hood originates at the alternator. Batteries store the power the alternator makes. Batteries do not make power. Therefore, you need to get a big alternaotr, the biggest one your engine will take.

The stereo and batteries are currently chewing alternators up because they run at full tilt, or "REDLINE", whenever we can hear you coming. Based on the size of your stereo, you are chewing every available ounce of power from a standard 80 amp alternator when at full power with a bass heavy song. If you had a 150, or a 200, you would be better off, as it would work less hard. If you tackle the wires and battery, that may take care of it though, so do that first. Bass doesn't hit at full blast throughout the song....

Should you be unable to upsize the alternator, you run down to 3 very bad power generation options.
    1. nightly plug your car into a battery charger (power from the grid).
    2. Install an onboard generator (like an RV, to make more power).
    3. Solar panels or wind generators (yes you add a lot of drag with a wind generator.)

The alternative is to turn it down.
That defeats the purpose of having that nice a stereo in the first place.
I suggest you ensure the wires are up to snuff first (less than 5% drop).
Second, upgrade to better batteries; 25% efficiency will help you out a lot (60% vs 85%)...
Third, up size the alternator if you still need to. The system will work less hard due to #1 and #2.What type of battery do I need for my car stereo system?
Kinetic is best performing for my car. What type of battery do I need for my car stereo system?
Kinetic or shuriken, they both make nice batteries. I am currently running the small shuriken on 2000 watts.

  • How do I hook up the antenna on my car stereo?

Installed a new stereo but it doesn't play fm tuner or am tuner or any radio stations just static. The car stock antenna is one of those old ones that go in and out and rise up out to play the radio. Its probably not connected. Any idea how to fix this? How do I hook up the antenna on my car stereo?
When you installed the new stereo you may have not connected two necessary things:

    1. The antenna itself - a coaxial cable connection that plugs into the back of the radio.

    2. The remote wire for the power antenna. Without this the antenna will not extend when the radio turns on and you won't get reception.

If the antenna is not activating it's probably number 2. If your stereo does not have a power antenna or remote wire, then you will have to wire the antenna remote input to a wire that has power when the car is turned on (like the wire for the radio power, not the radio memory wire that's always on). Then the antenna will always be up when the car is on.

How important is amps on a car stereo?

I just screwed up my stereo cause my tape deck got stuck but anyway I'm looking for a new stereo. I wanna cheap one but good. how important are the amps in a car stereo? and if the stereo has low amps should i also get a amplifier? How important is amps on a car stereo?
When you're shopping for a stereo deck, you probably won't find much difference in terms of power output. Just about all modern decks will produce around 15-20 watts RMS per channel. A few watts of difference in power ratings won't usually make an easily audible difference in the sound. Pick a new stereo that's easy to use and has the features you want, and don't worry too much about the power ratings.

If sound quality is important to you, then you'll probably want to use an external amplifier. If you're still using stock speakers, then there's not much point to an amp.

To clear up some misinformation: you don't have to closely match speaker and amplifier power ratings. A speaker rated for 75 watts won't have any problem at all with a deck that produces 20 watts. A mis-match won't necessarily produce any extra distortion, and it's not true that distortion is a major cause of speaker damage. Speakers are damaged by too much power, not distortion. How important is amps on a car stereo?
yesHow important is amps on a car stereo?
you mean watts, and its important to have speakers that require around the same wattage as the radio puts out for best sound quality when you turn up the volume if the two wattages are close you run a lower risk or playing distorted sound and distortion is the main cause of speaker damage

Buy an FM transmitter for your Ipod. It will transfer the music to a radio station on your cars stereo.
The BEST way would be to use your car stereos aux input jacks, if so equipped - and most radios these days do have the aux input in the back of the unit. Sometimes its as easy as pulling out the radio and plugging in the cord from your Ipod - but sometimes its more difficult and you need to buy a special cord that plugs into the back of your radio that will allow you to connect the Ipod - you can research it at www.crutchfield.com and see what you need to make your hookup a direct-connect - which will greatly improve the sound quality and your enjoyment. How do I get my iPod to play on my car stereo?

The 12V battery in your car operates a 25 amp car stereo. What is the resistance of this stereo system? The 12V battery in your car operates a 25 amp car stereo. What is the resistance of this stereo system?
    Simply use Ohm's Law, i.e.,

    V = IR

    where

    V = voltage = 12 v

    I = current = 25 amp

    R = resistance

    and substituting values,

    12 = 25(R)

    R = 0.48 ohm

Hope this helps. The 12V battery in your car operates a 25 amp car stereo. What is the resistance of this stereo system?
here's my guess... from what i remember from college physics, V voltage is equal to the product of I current and R resistance, V=IR. so with this formula, you might be able to have an answer of 0.46 ohms...

Can you connect a laptop to your car stereo headunit?

If I were to buy a laptop could I connect it to my pioneer headunit? I noticed when I installed my headunit that it had a pair of rca jacks (or so it appeared) and my stereo has an auxillary function. Is it possible to do this so you can play MP3's right off the computer through your car's stereo sound? Can you connect a laptop to your car stereo headunit?
yes, you'll need a stereo cable from 1/8" stereo jack (laptop) to 2 RCA connectors (car). But make sure first that you have an aux imput on your car audio! The 2 RCAs you've seen might be just outputs (for external amplifier in your car). Not every car stereo comes with an aux inoput. If you really have one, it should be labeled as aux input. It this case all you need to do after you connect your cable is go on your car stereo prnt panel and select the imput (you'll probably have the options to play "radio", "cd" or "aux"(that's the one you want).

The big headache is how you run that cable out of the dashboard in such a way that you don't strangle it and still keep your headunit tight in place. (That's why my headunit has a front aux input). Good luck. Can you connect a laptop to your car stereo headunit?
it is pretty possible that the audio playback from your laptop is amplified and played by your pioneer car stereo system..you will be needing a cable which has a pair of rca jacks on one end (for the auxilliary function of your stereo system) and a headphone jack on the other end (for audio output of your laptop).then all u have to do is connect the cables in their respective slots..voila!!! its done..the sound from your laptop will be amplified and played back from your car stereo..

still no sound ?? try configuring your laptop's sound configuration for the volume control and other tweaks which are extremely easy to understand...

    hope to hear from you..

    enjoy !!!

It may be that however you have this auxiliary device set up, too much electric discharge is occurring that is forcing the stereo head to shut off to prevent damage. Unfortunately, if this is the case, there arnt a whole lot of things you can do to fix it. Try connecting a discharge cable (just a standard conducting wire) from the metal chassis of your car to a metal spot on the device. Other than that, I have no idea...

What would I buy to be able to play my Zune through my car stereo?

I got a new car a couple of months a go. It's a 2005 Scion xA. I want to play my Zune through the stereo but I don't know what to buy. My car doesn't have an AUX output but it does have a cigarette lighter. I don't want to buy the FM Transmitter because I heard it sucks. What would I buy to be able to play my Zune through my car stereo?
Yes, wireless fm modulators can sound horrible! There are hard wire versions of fm modulators that can actually sound really good however, but professional installation would be highly recommended. Basically, the installer would remove your radio, disconnect your fm antenna, plug it in to your modulator, then plug it back into yor car's radio. There are also companies that make a digital interface that plug in through the factory sat radio port on the back of stock radio. Just type '2005 scion oem auxiliary input adapter' into a search engine and you will get several results. Also, have you considered changing the radio in your car to one that has a built in auxiliary input? After parts and labor, you probably won't be looking at anymore than $200 or more based on what radio you choose.

JoeyWhat would I buy to be able to play my Zune through my car stereo?
yes there is away to input audio, your radio needs to have a aux or disc or cd button

you will press it twice to enter the aux mode you need this interface good luck

Is it possible to connect straight up? if so what do i need? Can i connect a car stereo straight to a 12v car battery?
You have gotten really good ansewer's. If you will note every one mentioned a fuse. They are so right!! The only thing I could add to those great ansewrs is to use two fuse's.One for the stereo it should be 15 to 20 amp depending on the amprage of the stereo. One for the amplifier it should be at least 30 amp. a breaker would be even better. Be sure to use a little heavier gauge wire on the amplifier because it will draw more amps. Always connect the positive lead first ( red wire) the negative second ( black wire) to disconnect go in reverse. This helps to reduce a large spark on contact that could cause the gases that develop around the battery to ignite especialy in an area that is not well ventilated!! You can buy a small cheap trickle charger at auto zone or wal-mart to keep you'r battery chaged. Remember batteries are filled with acid so keep it on a piece of rubber mat or something like. Have fun with you'r project! I built one myself. You get alot of sound for about half the money! Not to mention they look neat and probably no one else around you has one like it.
yes I did this once. remember to fit an "in-line fuse" in the positive supply though.

You need to make sure the elecrtical work is of a decent standard because a car battery stores a LOT of energy, it can overheat wiring and start a great big fire. Can i connect a car stereo straight to a 12v car battery?
yes you can. be sure to use a fuse between the connection to avoid frying your stereo if you happen to ground it by mistake.
gotta have a fuse in between to protect your radio. you can hardwire any electrical device, but it could get damaged if something shorts out.Can i connect a car stereo straight to a 12v car battery?
It is possible, but not advisable.

If you don't have a fuse then the expensive radio is damaged if there is a fault.
easy to do ...just make sure you have the right fuses and a way to charge the battery
Just make sure you fuse the items in the normal way
i have done it before but you will need an in line fuse and just hook it up positive and negative to the right side

Do I have to EARTH my car stereo to the chassis?

I have installed a new car stereo and everything tested well. During the test I connected the earth wire to the bracket of the old unit. It needs a solid ground path. The roof of the ashtray ( I can't see it) sounds like it could be rather flimsy and not a solid connection. My old stereo powered up before I changed the wires. I may have connected the wires wrong. How exactly do I test to see which wires are in the right place and are working. Like the ground wire and power wire? How do i go about testing car stereo wires?
Well the best way is to take a 9v battery and a test light to the wires. The usual obvious power wires are Red %26amp; Yellow on most cars unless someone has changed them and the Black is common ground or you can use a frame ground which is just as good but make sure no paint is hindering the connection.
Take the test light and connect it to a frame ground and prob each wire and usually the memory is the constant hot and once you have that one located turn the car on accessory and probe the wires again for the turn on wire.
To figure out speaker connections, hook the 9v battery to each lead that is not a power wire and continue to test each one till you hear a crackle sound out of the speakers that will tell you which is which, as for which is + %26amp; - that requires hooking up the radio to do so since you normally can hear when a speaker is wired wrong the bass sounds all muddled and crappy.

I would recommend going to crutchfields website. you can search for a stereo by your car, so you'll know exactly what fits, and what you'll need. Then, write down what you light, and shop around. Crutchfield is hella expensive. I buy from there only when I can't find something locally cheaper.

You should visually inspect them. Take the head unit out and have a look at the splice points and make sure they are secure. If not, cut, strip, and reconnect with either crimp connectors or solder and heatshrink and/or electrical tape. How do i tell if my car stereo wires are still intact?
Just check them with a voltmeter if not good just replace the harness which will fit that car

Why does my ipod change the sounds settings on my car and stereo?

I have an ipod. And every time i plug it into my car stereo or the stereo at home it changes all of the sound settings on my stereos. (you know like treble and bass etc)

Why does it do this, and how can i fix it?Why does my ipod change the sounds settings on my car and stereo?
    Hi Mark,

You did not tell us the type of Ipod you have. However, I suggest that you restore ( reset) the OS, which I feel might correct the issue.

How do you hook up a car stereo?

I recently purchased a Durabrand sar stereo for my husband's car. I have hooked all the wires up the way it says in the manual, and I still can't get it to work. I checked the fuzes and they are OK. There is no power to the stereo. In the manual it says that the red is the power but also attached to the red connector box is also a orange and a light blue. What are the extra wires for and if they aren't hooked up what do I do with them? How do you hook up a car stereo?
You probably won't need the orange and you won't need the light blue wire...

Here is a list of every wire and what it is for.

    http://www.sfxaudio.com/AudioSchool/colo鈥?/a>

Make sure that your red wire is connected to an ignition or accessory source. It should be a source that turns on when the car turns on. Then make sure that your yellow wire is connected to a constant voltage source. How do you hook up a car stereo?

If I have an aftermarket car stereo, do I need to get a vehicle wiring harness for a new one?

I already have an aftermarket (Pioneer) car stereo in my Jeep with a vehicle-specific wiring harness. I am getting a new car stereo (Alpine) and need to know if I need to get another wiring harness with the new Alpine stereo, or can I just use my existing one?

Thanks all in advance! If I have an aftermarket car stereo, do I need to get a vehicle wiring harness for a new one?
aftermarket radios already come with a wiring harness to plug into their radio, so all you need to do is snip of the one connected to your pioneer and connect the alpine wires to the current wiring harness. If I have an aftermarket car stereo, do I need to get a vehicle wiring harness for a new one?
you sure do, the Alpine stereo have different wiring harness than pioneer. that's for sure.

How can I listen to my laptop over my car stereo?

I'm going on a 13 hour road trip and would like to listen to my collection of podcasts on my iTunes library. How can I listen in through my car stereo speakers? I've tried the transmitters on my iPod and they don't work very well. I'd like to be able to wire to my stereo somehow.

good luck. if your car stereo does not have a usb hub then you can't. they do make a usb to rca wire but you'll be required to plug it to the back of your stereos aux input if it has one.

Unless the car has a built in MP3 input jack, the FM transmitter is the only way to listen to your iPod in your car.

If it does have an MP3 jack, then all you have to do is buy the little cable that connects the two.

Hope I helped! How can i play my iphone and my boyfriends ipod through a car stereo?
Just buy an FM Transmitter like a Belkin Tunecast and it'll tune in to the best FM frequency in can find on your car stereo or but a cassette adaptor where you plug one end in to your mp3/iPod and put the tape in to the cassette slot with the tape option your going to get a tape rattling sound which could become an annoyance unless you car has an mp3 socket your not going to get any better if it has one just buy the required cable and plug them in to the relavent holes on your car/iPodHow can i play my iphone and my boyfriends ipod through a car stereo?

well in the UK you can get transmitters to fit for Ipod but i don't know in India. but ill tell you what it is called so then you can look for it in India. it is called Belkin Transmitter.

you could also purchase this from E-bay and Amazon.

What do I need to run a car stereo in the house?

I have a 12v 1.2A AC adapter off an old router, is this likely to have anywhere near the power requirement to run a car stereo? What do I need to run a car stereo in the house?
It'll work but u need more amps to run at a better rms. I tried it with an 1 amp and it worked but u turn it up and it'll just turn off, at 16 of 50 on my volume control and I like it at 18 in my car. I've heard u need like 6 amps to run at full power for a HU but idk for sure. What do I need to run a car stereo in the house?
Sony CDXGT550UI MP3/WMA/AAC Player CD Receiver with iPod Direct Control via USB stereo sounds good, is nice looking, and is relatively easy to use. The built-in equalizer allows you to customize the sound to your liking. The blue faceplate light option looks great, but the green light option looks washed out, so I'm using the blue light option even though I have a green digital dashboard. The only other complaint I have is the wires provided in the cable harness were a little short for my custom installation. I guess if you'll be replacing your stock stereo with this one and using the custom patch cable that connects this stereo directly to your car's stereo wire harness, you won't care about the short wire harness provided for custom installations... Overall, a good stereo for the price. By the way, my son bought the same stereo, and he loves his.

How much electricity does it take to power an aftermarket car stereo?

Ive got a JVC CD/MP3 stereo that I pulled out of my car after I totaled it. My VanHalen cd is stuck inside, and I want it out. I currently have emulated a power supply of 12v (regulated through an AC adapter), ground, and a toggle switch to take place of the accessory from the ignition.

My issue is, the power supply(s) that I am using are only pushing 15.7v. The unit itself is lighting up, yet there is still not enough electricity to completly power up and use the device. How much electricity does it take to power an aftermarket car stereo?
Your adapter may only put out milli amps, not suitable for playback for sure, not even for ejection motor. Hook up to a battery instead of the dingy transformer.
just find a friends car and ask to take out theirs and put that in for a sec to get it out.How much electricity does it take to power an aftermarket car stereo?
Time to get back to basics - look up the Ohm's law, and answer your question yourself. Using gray matter is what differs us - well, some of us anyway - from Neanderthals!
    1. 12v should be sufficient

    2. Are the power supply(s) outputting dc volts

    3. power supply(s) need to be sufficient power rating you need at least 1amp to run a car stereo

    4. if all else fails connect it to a car batteryHow much electricity does it take to power an aftermarket car stereo?
It's the amperage of the power supply that matters. Not voltage. Possibly, your power supply is not able to deliver the current necessary to drive the stereo. If that's the case, you'll have to find another power supply.

I have no idea what the current requirements would be for your stereo, but I would think that a power supply with at least 2 amp capability would be sufficient.
Instead of the power supply, why not just use a car battery? Hold the hot wire to the post and another to the case to ground it. If that doesn't do it, then you have another problem.

First you need an aftermarket radio deck. Subs won't hook up to a stock deck. With the purchase of a deck, you need a wiring harness, and a dash kit. If youre going to get subs, then you need a wiring kit, which is a power supply for them. As far as subs and quality, depending upon youre price range alpine is a good product, and a little on the high end side for most consumers. A nice medium for price and quality is Kicker. Now with subs you should look at size and watts. The higher the wattage, the harder theyll hit. Now the amp for the sub(s) also has a wattage max. Example being if you have 2 subs at 1200 watts each and a 600 watt amp, then the subs will only operate at 300 watts each. All this information can be found at a local best buy or even Walmart. It does get pricy but in my opinion worth itCar Stereo??????????????
For woofers, subwoofers, and amplifiers, some of the top brands are Lanzar, Bazooka, and Kicker.

Right now I'm really into Kicker. Kicker subwoofers amplify bass to a whole new level, with dual-voice coils and a unique top-plate to provide the best possible sound. And WITHSTAND said sound 鈥?no matter what I blast, these babies don't quit.

(Sorry, I'm kind of a stereo nerd.)

Kicker car stereo amplifiers %26amp; woofers are available online for pretty cheap, but they don't look cheap 鈥?they look sleek and legit, which they are.

I'm always on the lookout for car stereo sale promotions. I've had some good luck with http://www.crispdeals.com.

    Good luck!
Start with what type of music you mostly listen to and go from there. Usually a pair of decent 10 or 12 inch subs running off 500 rms is a good place to start. Try Alpine or pioneer as they are a decent price and good quality. Keep recearching and you will find what you want.

They run specials where if you spend more than X, they will instal it for "free. "Free" means they will charge you for a wiring harness or something, but it's cheaper than going to a private installer. I've had them do a couple and they did a good job. "X" is $150 or $200 or something.

I have an 86 Cadillac Cimarron. I'm a college student, so I'm stuck with it. Needless to say, it doesn't have a CD player.

My brother had one that he bought installed in his old car. I was about 10 at the time and the car is long gone, so I'm not sure what to look for.

It had a button on it that made the front part pop off of the car and he bought it at an electronics store.

I'm not too sure what to look for... it's been a long time since I've seen something like it.

i'm not sure if the old caddy has a double-din or not, so like the other guy said, go to crutchfield.com and they will tell you what fits in your car

i wouldn't however suggest buying from them, as they sell most of their products at MSRP (retail cost) and they can be had for much cheaper elsewhere.

there are solid cd players out there for 100-150, or like someone else mentioned, hit up a pawn shop, just ask them to hook it up first to make sure it all works the way it should.
Go to www.crutchfield.com you can put in information about your car and it will tell you what will fit, or what you can do to make something fit. Also almost every CD player that you can buy now, has a removable face plate, so you don't have to worry wether the front comes off of the one you want or not.Car stereo?
If its that old forget it-go to a local pawn shop, flea market or thrift store and you should find one real cheap. You will also need a installation kit that fills in the gaps and mounts the new unit properly.Good luck Countess!
I would go to a shop where they install it for you so you don't have to worry about doing it properly. I got my (Alpine) at a place called Myer-Emco (don't know if there is one near you) but I know they can install at Circuit City and Best Buy, etc. That said, I agree with the first poster about crutchfield.com, the folks there are very knowledgeable and I would find out what kind of things you are looking for in a CD player before you go to a place where the sales people might try to sell you something you can't afford. You should be able to get a decent CD player for around $200.Car stereo?

I used to have a stereo several years ago that did that. It is to remind you to detach the detachable faceplate and take it with you. Very few people actually do that. I did for about a week, then I started stashing it under the seat. Eventually, I just left it in place. Some radios may have a way to disable the beeps.
Go to the manufacturer's website? I wish i could tell you, my sony does the same thing but it's normal, Does it sound like it's trying to tell you something like a warning sound, or a message beep? It's odd the manual doesn't say anything about beeps and yet it does.Car stereo?

what are the best settings for a car stereo with the low, mid, and high settings on the equalizer for the best sound output, preferably with good bass? thanks :)Car stereo?
General rule of thumb on this issue is: Set everything the way you think it sounds best, you're the one who has to listen it everyday.
fer bose in car premium sound do 10trebble and 7baseCar stereo?
First off there is no set setting for car audio. Every system is different and should be tune to meet the needs of the listener. Also, the way i listen to music may not be the way you like to. Generally the full range speakers should be cut off at 100hz as to not produce bass which can damage them. As for the subs have the lp set at 80-100hz and you should be okay. If you have a component set it gets more difficult because you have to set the roll off db and the cut off for the tweeter as well as the midrange. Either way the best way to set it is how you prefer it to sound. Its your car and as such you are the main one who will listen to it so get in there and tune away.
to keep it short and simple, the best settings for an equalizer, is the setting you like the best. we cannot help you with your question. sorry.Car stereo?
ok....here is an actual answer for you....go to best buy, chat with the audio guys there and ask them to help you tweek your radio...offer the guy some cash on the side and see what he says....I bet he'll be cool with it- it should only take them about 5 minutes........good luck, I know all the settings can be confusing-I just went through that with my deck

hey i wanted to know if a car stereo has a usb attachment! does that mean i just plug in my i pod and it will work!!!??? as i am confused some say i pod ready for example and some just say usb!!!??? help as its for a crimbo present xCar stereo?
it is radio specific, but normally they are two differnt things.. a USB is going to look for files to play, nothing more nothing less.. ipod compatability menas the radio actually talks to the ipod. giving control from the radio to change playlists and tracks ect.. with a simple usb drive it may be more finiky, and i would suspect that it may not find all tracks only those in a root directory..

but this is just a educated guess, i have a computer background and i am a audio nut, but i have not actually used several decks with a ipod to know for sure 100%.
my stereo has a usb slot, and i can plug in a pen drive. I dont know if you can plug in any old usb device, but the manual should say so. (mine is a kenwood).

I think it may work if the device is recognised as a single external drive and doesnt draw too much current. Some hard drive cases draw too much and dont work properly.Car stereo?
Yes it will work I have one with the same and I just plug and play ...mine works of Ipod and MP3 Player ...it should even displays tracks on screen of stereo
Some car radios have usb slots but not all of them can play Ipod through the USB. To play and control Ipod through the USB the radio has to have the DRM (Digital Rights Management) hardware from Ipod installed in it and a whole bunch of control software. HOWEVER if you have and Aux in audio jack then you can play through your sterio but not control the ipod from your sterio.Car stereo?
yea mine has a USB plug thing and i just hook my ipod up to it and it works fine. you can also hook other stuff up to them also
Well this really depends on the KIND of RADIO you have. If its a Sony GT420IP the 08 model then it will work. This model has a USB slot in the front that allows you to insert a flash drive to the faceplate and play your music on the headunit. Also this model comes with an IPOD adapter that allows you to hookup your IPOD to the car using this specific wire. This wire is located on the back of the Unit and it is a 30 pin design used for almost any IPOD. If you have this model and you bought it from a store Best Buy Circuit City etc.. then it should have come with the adatper for the IPOD. If you could email me with the Brand and Model number I can help you get a lil more detailed info on the headunit. Also Almost every 2008 model Sony comes with an AUX port on the from of the headunit. You can buy a 2-way headphone jack and use it to control your IPOD/MP3 player. The head unit WILL NOT control the IPOD but it will allow you to use your IPOD for alot cheaper than what the adaptors cost for them. For a Pioneer IPOD Adapter, it is $35 Sony its like $50, JVC is like $40. Plus you have to get these adaptors ordered and installed buy a professional which cost about 40 bucks installed plus parts. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!

    Car Stereo?

What is the best Car Stereo for a 2004 nissan sentra? Please provide cost and installation cost too pleaseCar Stereo?
there is not such thing as BEST...well at least not for me....buy one that you like...go to different stores...look at the stereos...in most stores the stereos are connected and you can turn up the volume....never let anyone tell you what to buy....buy what you think its right for you....and the installation should not be more than 40 dollars...or if your lucky they might install it for free
well like there is no best but its up to you what you want to buy it all depends on what fetures you are looking for in a stereo if you want to be able to connect you ipod or if you want it stellite ready its all up to you some good brands are alpine ,pioneer, blaukpunkt, and so many other more the cost range from 40 to 80 dollars but if you go to circut city if you buy a stereo for more than 100 dollars you get free installation or if you want to install it yourself just buy the wiring harness and the dash kit for it and you'll be surprise how easy it is good luckCar Stereo?
well you need to say what music you listen to, how you listen to it, and what your budget is, then you can determine what the best car stereo is for you! check out www.noisegateonline.com. Currently some great stuff is Powerbass which has something for everyone. Installation should go something like this:

    Head Units 40-50

    Speakers 25-35 each

    Amps 40-55

In addition are parts...to convert a head unit you need a wire harness and indash kit at 15 each....wires to run an amp can run 30-50 dollars....if you don't have rca outputs on your headunit and want to add an amp you need a line level converter that is about 15.....

On any car stereo, you can spend 100 to 1000's of dollars!
Well first off you can not order anything from www.noisegateonline.com unless you call them. If I were you I would go to:

    www.woofersetc.com

    www.cardomain.com

either one of those sites will have something you are looking for. As for the best that is all up to you, what type functions are you looking for? Although Alpine, and Eclipse are great companies but may cost alot of money. Just look arond on both sites and figure out what your looking for because there really is no best.Car Stereo?
there are definitely better stereos than others... it does not depends strictly on what you like.... higher end pioneer and eclipse radios give you much better sound quality than others... if you are looking to add an amp you should focus on at least 5v pre-outs so you can have optimal sound quality. also, if you are looking to add an amp, get a radio with a good equalizer. your amps are only as good as your EQ.

    Car stereo??

Ok, I have a Pioneer DEH-34 car stereo. I just put it in a 1997 saturn sc2 with a scosche dash kit. Now my stereo is very loose inside the dash kit. There is also gaps between the stereo and dash kit. Isnt there something that slides onto the back of the stereo and goes onto the front to get rid of gaps and looseness?? I just need to know what this is and where to get one.Car stereo??
Do you mean the metal sleeve or "can" that the stereo should slide into? If you are missing that, you will have to go to Circuit City or Best Buy and beg the installers to see if they have one that will fit. Usually guys that work there keep a stock of sleeves.

    Car stereo?

i dont know any thing about car stereos so i was wonderin what would be the best car stereo, i want around 1000 watts and a sub. i kno its probably not good to have it this loud or all that stuff, i jsut wanna know what i would need. also say there is 2 spots for speakers and a sub, could i hook up 4 speakers and 2 subs and get mor watts? or would it just even it self out between the speekersCar stereo?
The sub volume is completely independent from ur speak volume. I dont want to get technical on this subject since you say you are not familiar with it.

Just assume it is a Home entertainment surround sound system. If you buy a set, it comes with a sub and then 4 or 5 extra speakers for you to hang on the wall, right?

assume those speakers is the 4 speakers of ur car, you can set the volume of those speakers and the sub independently, they work the same way.

For 1000 watts, you will need a capicitor(substitute of extra battery), because 1 single battery cannot support ur sound system and ur car all together. And then you need an amplifier with 6 channels, or 2 amplifier. Assume the amplifier is the the Sony CD player/equalizer. They will supply the energy to make sounds.

What is a channel when you shop is how many channel it has means how many things you can hook up to that amp. a 4 channel amp can power 4 speakers. 6 channel amp can power 4 speakers and 2 sub.

like the home CD players, if they have 4 ports at the back for 4 speakrs, and you have 6 speakers/sub, you will either have to buy another CD player with 2 extra port or 1 CD player with 6 ports. But then, you adjust the volume independently thru ur remote control, or push the buttons, right? it does not even itself out, you have to do it manually like ur TV.

And one more thing is, whats bridge mean combine 2 channel into 1 channel. Thus, a 2 channel with 100 watts each will become a 1 channel of 200 watts if you bridge it.

Those are the general idea, ask the professionals for more info.

Be ready to spend around $1000 for parts + labors if you wants a good sound system.
My best bet would be Kendwood or Phillips!!!Car stereo?
Well I would go with a Fi SSD 12 or 15, get the BP Power option which will put your subs RMS over 1000 watts.

Get a hifonics BXi1206 which will put out about 1000 watts

And a knukoncepts 4 gauge wiring kit.

you can get the amp and wire off ebay really cheap and the sub from ficaraudio.com

with that setup you will be very happy!

    Good luck
If your total system power is 850 watts RMS or more, you will need to:

    1. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator

    2. Upgrade to a heavy duty deep cycle battery

    3. Upgrade the "Big 3" - that is to replace the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis with at least 1/0 AWG wire.

Failure to do this will result in you replacing them anyway as the alternator will eventually fail.

Here is a guide that will calculate what size alternator and power wires you need http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php鈥?/a>

You'll need Microsft Excel to use it.

In my opinion, the most important thing about systems is MATCHING your speakers to the amp...not getting the biggest speakers you can find. I have two 15" Audiobahn Flame T [2000rms, 4000max]...with a 4000 watt amp, but my neighbor's two 600 watt 12"s still gave me a run for my money.

Concerning radios and speakers, try to stick to respected brands. I found that eBay will save you a load if you can find someone to install the stuff if you don't want to do it. I actually skimped on my amp and bought a 4000w Boss brand for $350...it performs surprisingly well.

One important thing about amps: channels are important for different sound combinations i.e. 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound found in home theaters [usually only stereo is used in cars though]...ohms are the limiting factor for speaker capacity of amps. An amp capable of sustaining a 0.5 ohm load can power more speakers than an amp only capable of a 2 ohm load. Most speakers will be labeled what they are rated: 2, 4, 6 or 8 ohm; some have only one voice coil, other have 2 or more voice coils complicating the ohm rating and giving more options for powering. A 1/2 ohm amp can power eight 4 ohm speakers, while a 2 ohm amp can only power two 4 ohm speakers both setups being wired parallel.

Most components have sufficient instructions to decipher these terms and techniques...otherwise go to www.rockfordfosgate.com to the Q%26amp;A and browse through the topics.
maybe you should talk to a professional if you don't understand what your doing they can help with all that kinda stuff
